Alicia began doing gymnastics at the young age of 18 months. She started her competitive career at the age of 6 and qualified for the state meet each one of her competitive club seasons, levels 4 through 9. Throughout her competitive club years, she was fortunate enough to train under former national team members and coaches such as Charlene Chen, Valeri Liukin, and Yevgeny Marchenko. During her final competitive year, she was a member of the western national team. She medaled at nationals at the age of 12. She also participated in high school gymnastics for Tracy High School her Freshman year, where she was awarded varsity MVP, won first place at the SCVAL league meet, and led the Bulldogs to a second place team finish. After transitioning to track and field in high school, she has remained involved with gymnastics by coaching younger athletes.
